Israeli authorities are preventing dozens of families of Palestinian prisoners deported to Egypt from traveling from the West Bank, head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club Abdullah al-Zaghari said Wednesday, reported Xinhua. Describing the Israeli move as "a systematic policy of collective punishment," Al-Zaghari said some of the prisoners are suffering from severe health conditions and are in dire need of continuous medical care and the presence of their families. He urged relevant parties to stop the Israeli move, noting that several issues related to the deportees' fate remain unclear, including the possibility of their resettlement in other countries. Israel deported 383 prisoners to Egypt this year as part of its prisoner-hostage exchange deal with Hamas, and most have remained there since their release, al-Zaghari said in a press statement. Israel required that Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis must be permanently deported if released under the Gaza ceasefire agreement and will not be allowed to return to their homes in the occupied West Bank. So far, Israeli authorities have not commented on the alleged ban.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday issued a pardon for imprisoned French-Algerian author Boualem Sansal on humanitarian grounds, following a request by the German president, reported dpa. Tebboune decided to "respond positively" to the proposal sent by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier earlier this week. In view of Sansal's advanced age and fragile health, Steinmeier suggested that the author be allowed to leave Algeria for Germany and offered to provide him with medical care. The Algerian presidency said in a statement that Germany will be responsible for transporting Sansal and for his medical treatment. Sansal, who won the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2011, was arrested in mid-November last year upon landing in Algiers. In March, he was sentenced to five years in prison for undermining national unity and security. The charges stem from an interview in which he stated that Morocco's national borders had been altered in Algeria's favour during the French colonial era. Sansal's conviction earlier this year was met with sharp criticism in France.

Canada on Wednesday imposed a new round of sanctions against Russia, targeting individuals and entities linked to the energy sector, military capabilities and cyber infrastructure, reported Xinhua. Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced in a news release that the measures target 13 individuals and 11 entities under the country's Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations. According to the release, the measures focus on degrading Russia's conventional and hybrid military capabilities while also hitting its energy revenues and financial enablers. Among those targeted are several individuals and entities involved in Russia's drone program. The measures also mark the first time Canada has sanctioned entities that supply cyber infrastructure allegedly used in Russian hybrid strategies against Ukraine, it said. Additionally, the sanctions list several Russian liquefied natural gas entities, as well as 100 vessels described as part of "Russia's shadow fleet." The release stated that these actions were taken in broad alignment with recent sanctions announced by the United States, the EU and the UK, and support ongoing efforts by the G7 to exert economic pressure on Russia. So far, Russia has not commented on the Canadian move.

Tuoreen ruotsalaistutkimuksen mukaan maksakirroosi on yleistynyt huomattavasti edeltävien vuosikymmenten aikana. Ennen kaikkea sairastumisriski on suurentunut pienituloisten keskuudessa, kertoo lääkäriseura Duodecim. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin kaikkien […]
